Italab Power Amplifier Modules

ITB from Italy manufactures power amplifier modules, using state of the art 48V MRF6… transistors by Freescale. These transistores make it very easy to have a linear amplifier at very high amplification levels. The efficiency of the modules is typically around 70%. The modules come preassembled and don't require alignment. They are built on Teflon PCB, mounted on solid 5mm copper heat sinks.

Some modules have a directional coupler and/or a SWR bridge installed. The construction of the transistors and the entire modules is very robust. Some of the modules would withstand a SWR of up to 65:1, given enough cooling. This enables you to construct a power amplifier which are easy to use, without any tuning.

All PA modules must be installed on a large, actively cooled heat sink for operation. The operating temperature must not exceed 40°C at 25°C ambient temperature. For best heat coupling the copper base (5 to 5.5mm thick) is precision milled. The ready to use 'Box' models come installed on a large heat sink. To build a fully useable amplifier further items like HF switching, power supply, fans, protection circuitry, maybe a low pass and a case are required.

The modules are covered by the usual warranty by the manufacturer, except for the transistors. The modules require a power supply of 44 to 48V DC, at an consumption of up to 30A, depending on model. WiMo offers a suitable power supply.

6dB Power attenuator

Power attenuator as a chip, to be installed directly in front of the input of the PA module, onto the heatsink.

This power attenuator serves two purposes. One it protects the amplifier against too high input power loads as a result of an operator error. Secondly it is not advised to reduce the power of a driver transceiver to some watts, because linearity usually decreases at low power levels. So better run at a medium power level (and good linearity) and then reduce the power level with a divider. Further, some transceivers produce a full power spike even at low poer settings, against which this divider can protect.

Proposal for a circuit controller board layout

For the initial setup of a complete power amplifier, we can offer at this point a circuit for a controller board. With this controller the entire power supply, transmit / receive switch and the filter can be controlled. We have not tested this circuit and want to make it available only as a suggestion!
